ATS FIELD EDUCATION

About Traditional Field Education

Traditional Field Ed is the most common type of Field Education experience in which an ATS Intern may participate.  In most cases, Traditional Field Ed takes place in a church-ministry setting.  Interns may do Traditional Field Ed in their home ministries, as long as they commit to “trying something new,” such as taking on new and/or expanded ministry activities and challenges.  In some cases, Interns may opt to relocate to a new ministry / church site for their Field Ed experience. 

In all Traditional Field Ed Internships, Interns must set forth specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound Personal Goals, Knowledge Goals, Skills Goals and Spiritual Goals.  Interns and Mentors must work closely throughout the Internship experience to ensure that these Goals are being pursued, with focus remaining on the Intern’s character development as s/he pursues God’s vocational call on his / her life.

Continuing In Your Home Ministry

(Moving from laity to Intern, or currently on staff)

Strengths:

  • Relationships are already established.
  • Intern can start right into Internship activities without much introduction / transition.
  • May be an easier transition for Intern and ministry.

Possible Weaknesses:

  • Intern could be a “prophet without honor in his hometown.”
  • People may have difficulty viewing Intern in his/her new, expanded role.
  • Internship may not be a stretching, challenging experience, as Intern might just do what they’ve always done.
  • Represents less change, and less room for new growth through change

Keep In Mind:

  • Mentoring meetings must be intentional.
  • Intern must set clear Learning Objectives and move toward them.
  • Intern must capitalize on “faith-filled risks.”
Relocating to a New Ministry

Strengths:

  • Intern’s learning curve will likely be steep.
  • Intern will have the opportunity to experience things done differently, and gain new perspective on ministry.
  • Change will foster growth in the Intern.

Possible Weaknesses:

  • Takes time to develop relationships.
  • If the Internship experience is short, Intern may not get beyond “being the new person.”

Keep In Mind:

  • Intern should make an effort to develop relationships.
  • People may not trust the Intern at first; it takes time to establish trust.
  • Intern is there to learn and serve, not tell the ministry how to do things their way.

As you prepare to begin your Field Ed experience at ATS, note that you must do two (2) things:

  1. Make an appointment with Louis Carlo to have your Internship approved.
  2. Then, complete the Field Ed Contract after thoughtful prayer and discussion with your Mentor.

The Field Ed Contract should be submitted (via email or mail) as soon as possible, and preferably prior to the start of the 1st semester of the Internship experience.
