NYSTCE August 2013 Update and Important Information

Posted by Diana.Nygard on Thursday August 15, 2013

NY has just released more information about the certification tests (www.nystce.nesinc.com).  The following are highlights of the new information along with some reminders.

Brand New Certification Exams:

  • The new Academic Literacy Skills Test (ALST), which Nyack uses for admission to 300- and 400-level education classes, will
    • be offered only as a computer-based exam,
    • begin being available September 23rd,
    • and have a cost of $131.
    • Advice: Everyone except freshmen and December graduates should register now before slots fill up.
  • The new Educating All Students (EAS), which Nyack uses for admission to student teaching/internship, will:
    • be offered only as a computer-based exam,
    • begin being available September 23rd,
    • and have a cost of $102.
    • Advice: Spring 2014 student teachers/interns should register now before slots fill up.

Content Specialty Test Revisions:

The Content Specialty Tests (CSTs), which Nyack uses for admission to student teaching/internship, will be changing over the course of the next few years.

  • The computer-based CSTs will cost $119 through April 2014, and then the price will change (assume that to mean increase).  These CSTs are
    • English Language Arts,
    • Multi-Subject,
    • Social Studies,
    •  and Students with Disabilities.
  • The paper-based CSTs are still $79.  These CSTs are:
    • English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) [the ESOL will be only computer-based starting May 2014.],
    • Mathematics,
    • and Music.
  • The following revised (i.e., more difficult) CSTs are scheduled for implementation Spring 2014:
    • English Language Arts,
    • Mathematics,
    • Multi-Subject (see below),
    • and Students with Disabilities.
  • Advice: Spring 2014 student teachers/interns who have not already taken their CST(s) should register now before slots fill up.

Changes to the Multi-Subject CST:

  • First, there will be multiple versions of the Multi-Subject CST, including an Early Childhood version and a Childhood version.  Early Childhood-Childhood majors will be certified in both of these areas and will have to take BOTH versions of the CST.  5-Year BS/MS Childhood Special Education majors will be certified in Childhood and in Special Ed and must take BOTH the Childhood Multi-Subject CST (no other Multi-Subject version, please!) and the Students with Disabilities CST.
  • Second, there will be three sections to each Multi-Subject CST and you must pass EACH section in order to pass the exam.  If you need to retake the exam, you will only need to retake the section(s) you failed.
